I am delighted to continue to lead the special education department at Ascent Academy – Lehi! I was previously an assistant principal and school psychologist at a K-9 charter school in the Salt Lake Valley. I am originally from Lakewood, New York (a small town near Buffalo) and graduated from the State University of New York College at Geneseo with a degree in psychology in 2009. There, I developed a passion for applying psychology to education. I received a master’s degree in school psychology from Alfred University in 2011 in order to pursue this passion. My graduate program focused on using assessments and interventions to meet the academic and behavioral needs of all students. I became a Nationally Certified School Psychologist in the summer of 2012. Before moving to Utah, I was a school psychologist at a rural school district in Western New York where I worked with students in preschool through 12th grade. I also have experience teaching leadership and communication skills at the R.O.P.E.S. course at the University of Utah.

I enjoy learning new things about education and psychology in my spare time. I also love road cycling, hiking, mountain biking, playing tennis, and spending time with friends and family. I look forward to every day of working with the AAU students!

I am excited to join the special education team at Ascent Academy of Utah Lehi.

I grew up in West Point, Utah. As a kid, I raised chickens, rabbits, and other animals for 4-H, then as a teenager I picked corn, bagged onions, and hauled hay, for which I was paid in change, unless the farmer remembered his checkbook. After graduating from Clearfield High School, I went off to Provo to go to BYU football and basketball games, play cards, and sometimes attend classes. Eventually, I had to buckle down and study, so after seven years I earned my bachelor’s degree. Don’t be too hard on me. You know, a lot of people go to college for seven years.

I have been teaching for twelve years, mostly in a junior high setting. I’ve taught reading, English, and math. I am delighted to have the opportunity to work with the upper elementary grade students.

My wife and I have been living in Lehi for eighteen years. I keep busy by raising my two kids (they’re noisier than rabbits, but cleaner than chickens) and bagging leaves (they don’t taste as good as onions, but they don’t smell as bad). I still enjoy going to BYU games, playing cards, and sometimes attending classes.

I grew up as a son of an Air Force serviceman and attended seven schools before I graduated from American High School in Fremont, California. Go Eagles!

In the 90’s, I went on to college and attended California State University, Sacramento where I graduated from Sac State with a BA degree in Government/International Relations.  A couple of highlights from my college life include representing Sac State at the Model United Nations in New York, NY and leading a delegation at the European Model United Nations at The Haag, Netherlands.

I took on my first full time teaching position at Centerville Junior High School in Fremont, California working with students who had emotional and social disabilities.  My second teaching gig landed me in Floresville, Texas where I taught at risk high school students at Floresville High School.  Go Floresville Tigers.

After living in Texas for 10 years my wife and family decided to move to the land of mountains, canyons and dry air.  We thought Utah would be a choice destination to plant roots.   I took a job at West Jordan Middle School working in the Special Education department and had a blast preparing students with disabilities for their high school careers.

My wife and I have been married for 23 years and we have three daughters and a son.  This is my first year teaching at Ascent Academy in Lehi.  I look forward to a wonderful, engaging and productive 2017- 2018 school year.  Go Huskies!

Speech and Language Pathologist

I love working with the students and parents at Ascent Academies. As an SLP, I have worked in many different settings: hospital, rehabilitation, treatment centers, nursing facilities, home health, early intervention, preschool, elementary, middle, and high schools. I have also worked in public, private, and charter school settings. I graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Communicative Disorders/Speech Language Pathology. I became a Speech Language Pathologist because I want to help students with difficulties improve their ability to successfully communicate with others. I love helping students realize their potential, make changes and then succeed beyond what they thought was possible.
My husband and I are the parents of 5 boys and a girl. I thoroughly enjoy spending my free time with my family. I love traveling, the outdoors and outdoor activities including golf, boating and most sports.
I am happy to be with Ascent Academies-Lehi for another great year.

Most important is that I’m a Mom to 6 wonderful adults, who have families of their own. My husband, of 50 years, is a CPA and has been involved in developing many Resorts, so we’ve lived all over the west Coast.

I’ve always volunteered in the children’s schools and when the youngest was in Middle School, I was hired to work in Special Ed department in Cave Creek, AZ. I also was an aid at a Head Start department of an Elementary School in Edwards, CO.

In Bend, Oregon they have a wonderful program with the Parks and Recreation Dept. for before and after school and a summer program for all the youth that I participated in, while also subbing for the Special Education department in Bend’s school district.

While in Arizona, I heard of a need in their before and after school program and was hired for that. Then we moved to Utah.

As you can see, I love working with the youth and have volunteered for the Boy Scouts and many of their organizations.

I’m looking forward to be of any assistance I can in this school and getting to know the faculty and children.

I was raised in a military family (Air Force). I moved ten times by the time I was in the tenth grade. The longest I've ever lived in one house was three years. I lived and experienced many different areas of the United States and world including California, Colorado, Azore Islands (Portugal), Texas, Utah, Florida, Alaska, and Arkansas. Some of my favorite memories are of my junior high years in the beautiful land of Alaska. My father was from San Diego, California and that was where my parents chose to settle after retiring from the Air Force. San Diego is where I went to high school and also eventually met my husband, Phil. I attended BYU and studied Elementary Education.  I have worked as an assistant in Special Education for eight years. Special education is where my heart is. I am excited to join the Special Education team at Ascent Academy Utah!

I have four amazing children and three brilliant grandchildren with two on the way! I enjoys reading, gardening, decorating, and crafting. My favorite time is time spent with my family and taking road trips with my husband.

I have a B.S. from the University of Utah in Special Education and love, love, love working with the students at Ascent.

My husband and I are Utah natives and we have two boys. As a family we enjoy traveling, hiking and doing anything as a family.

I love the quote by Eleanor Roosevelt that says “Do one thing every day that scares you.”
I try to encourage this same thing to the students at Ascent Academy, to branch out of their comfort zone and to try new things.

I am Mackenzie Skousen and I am excited for my first year at Ascent Academy. I recently received my Bachelors degree from Brigham Young University in communication Disorders. I decided to become a Speech Language Technician because I love interacting with kids and teenagers and helping them improve their ability to communicate.

I grew up in Mesa, Arizona and have lived in Utah for 5 years. I served a mission for my church in Guatemala from 2013-2014. This last summer I spent 4 weeks in Paraguay with youth building classrooms at a local elementary school. I am fluent in Spanish and love practicing. I enjoy being outside riding my bike, boating, or playing volleyball and tennis. I also enjoy floral arranging and doing anything creative. I love traveling and learning about different people and cultures.

I am happy to be here and excited to work with you and your kids!

My childhood was spent in New Jersey. So if you detect a slight accent that is why.
My greatest joy is being the mother of 7 children. I like being in the outdoors. Although I enjoy hiking, it is quite limited now.
For the past 11 years I have been working at charter schools as a teacher aide and special ed aide. Also I have volunteered as a reading tutor at several city libraries.
I enjoy working as a team and with students to provide the most benefit for all.  I am excited to work at Ascent Academy and be part of this team.
